Fake Deposit QR Codes

Scammers ask you to pay a "holding deposit" or "booking fee" via personal QR codes or bank transfers before you have even viewed the property.

Red Flags

  • Asked to pay before viewing
  • Payment to a personal account, not a company
  • QR code sent via WhatsApp or Telegram
  • No receipt or tenancy agreement provided

Off-Platform Luring

They move conversations to WhatsApp or Telegram quickly, removing all evidence trail. Once off-platform, there is no record if disputes arise.

Red Flags

  • Insists on WhatsApp "for faster communication"
  • Refuses to use in-app messaging
  • Sends personal phone number immediately
  • Claims the platform "is slow" or "has issues"

Fake or Stolen Listings

Attractive photos stolen from other sites, with prices well below market rate to attract maximum interest. The property may not exist or belong to the lister.

Red Flags

  • Price significantly below market rate
  • Photos look too professional or watermarked
  • Vague location details or no unit number
  • Lister cannot arrange a physical viewing

Pressure & Urgency Tactics

Creating fake urgency - "someone else is about to take it" or "deposit must be paid today" - to rush you into paying before you can verify.

Red Flags

  • "Another tenant is viewing today"
  • "Pay now or lose the unit"
  • Offers a "special discount" that expires immediately
  • Discourages you from visiting in person

Safe Renting Checklist

Smart renters follow these guidelines. Make them second nature.

Always Do

  • Always communicate through Dourr's in-app messaging
  • Visit the property in person before paying any deposit
  • Verify the lister's identity and ownership of the property
  • Request a proper tenancy agreement before any payment
  • Report suspicious listings or behaviour immediately

Never Do

  • Never pay deposits via personal QR codes or bank transfers to individuals
  • Never share your IC, bank details, or passwords through chat apps
  • Never sign anything or pay before physically viewing the property
  • Never rush into a decision because of "urgency" from the lister
  • Never continue a transaction if the lister avoids in-app messaging
